Helen & Andy - Destination Wedding, Perth, Scotland
Confession time, Helen is one of my oldest and dearest friends! When she announced she was getting married it was quickly followed by "please cover our wedding photography — I wouldn't trust anyone else." What am I gonna do?
Say yes, obviously. Pack my bags, grab my cameras, and head to Perth.
Now, photographing a close friend's wedding is a whole different experience. There's no professional distance to hide behind. I know Helen. I've laughed with her, cried with her, shared more bottles of wine than I care to admit. But Andy? A complete mystery to me. I'd heard all about him, of course — Helen had made sure of that — but walking into this wedding, I was meeting the man himself for the very first time. Fortunately, it took about five seconds to see exactly why Helen had fallen for him. Warm, funny, completely besotted with her. Approved.
And Helen and Andy were completely at ease with me there. No nerves, no stiffness, just two people utterly in love getting on with the best day of their lives while their mate followed them around with a camera.
Now, when most people think Scotland, they think rain, midges and packing an extra layer. Not this day. It was gloriously, almost absurdly hot — the kind of heat that catches you off guard when you're standing in this Scottish city wondering why you didn't bring sun cream. The light was stunning for it though, golden and warm, and Perth looked absolutely incredible basking in the sunshine.
And then came the evening. The Black Watch — one of Perth's most iconic and historic venues — played host to a proper Scottish Ceilidh. If you've never experienced a Ceilidh, imagine the most joyful, chaotic, breathless dancing you've ever seen, with everyone throwing themselves into it with complete abandon. It was brilliant to photograph. Pure, unscripted joy.
Getting to document one of the most important days of my best mates life? Honestly, I'm so glad you asked me, Helen.
Congratulations, you two. Here's to a lifetime of adventures. 🥂
